Job Details

The LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA. seeks a Chair of the Department of Medicine. The new chair will provide strategic leadership to include a written and measurable vision. The vision should reflect consultation with the Dean and other Department Chairs in the ongoing evolution and success of the LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine. Under the leadership of Dr. G.E. Ghali, DDS, MD, FACS, FRCS(Ed), the Chair will build on an excellent foundation of 80 full-time faculty and work collaboratively with other departments. Our health sciences center is home to the School of Medicine, School of Graduate Studies and School of Allied Health Professions and a robust research enterprise. More than 800 students are enrolled in the degree programs at any one time. Additionally, nearly 600 residents and fellows are trained each year.  

The Department of Medicine has diverse clinical settings including the comprehensive University Health hospital in Shreveport, University Health Monroe, the Shriner’s Hospital for Children and the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The university’s primary teaching hospital, University Health Shreveport, serves as a regional referral center for North Louisiana, East Texas and South Arkansas. Overall, the combined facilities provide extensive experience in both outpatient and inpatient care.

The primary objectives of the Department of Medicine are high-quality patient care and research, progressive faculty and resident development in clinical and research skills, and an environment which challenges students, residents, and faculty alike, while providing maximum opportunity for development.


The candidate must have an outstanding record of leadership with experience in administration, education, research, and quality health care delivery. The candidate must have an in-depth knowledge and ability to effectively lead clinical educators and researchers while growing the scholarly and research activities of the department, along with providing high quality clinical services. The candidate once selected will have a significant influence on clinical research in three of our centers including the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center (FWCC), Center for Cardiovascular Diseases and Sciences (CCDS, and Center for Excellence in Arthritis and Rheumatology (CEAR). The candidate must have an understanding of quality improvement and patient safety principles, the ability to build new programs (i.e. Hospitalist Program), healthcare service delivery experience, and the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with partners. The candidate must have a firm commitment to the education of residents and medical students. The candidate should qualify for the rank of Professor of Medicine and be eligible for a Louisiana Medical License.
