The Executive Director of the Center for Health and Wellbeing and Senior Public Health Officer reports to the Vice Provost for Student Affairs and serves as a member of the Student Affairs senior leadership team. The Executive Director is responsible for the strategic leadership and visionary direction of a multidisciplinary team and will champion the areas of Counseling and Psychiatric Services, Student Health Services, Living Well (Education and Outreach), and Division I Athletic Training in their successful management of operations and advancement of integrated programs and services.

Working directly with the President and Vice Provost, the Executive Director will serve as both an institutional and national thought leader on college health, and leverage UVM’s already strong reputation for improving student health and wellness.The Executive Director will have responsibilities for overseeing public health initiatives for the campus and creating meaningful opportunities to engage directly with others who are working to positively influence student health and campus culture.

The Executive Director will provide strong leadership for an organization of approximately 65 full-time and part-time staff and oversee an $8.7M annual budget. The Executive Director will lead short-term and long-range planning through assessment strategies and evidenced-based programs serving 10,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate and medical students. As a member of the Student Affairs leadership team and University’s Emergency Operations Group, the Executive Director will contribute to division-wide strategic planning and key university initiatives/events, in addition to supporting campus-wide response during campus emergencies. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or M.D in medicine, public health, social work, health education, or related field.
  • Five years administrative experience in mental or medical healthcare environment required, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
  • Demonstrated leadership in a college health or counseling center, or relevant healthcare administration, with experience integrating physical and mental health services.
  • Understanding of the unique aspects of counseling and medical services for college-age populations and experience working with diverse college populations.
  • Strong leadership and management experience inclusive of professional staff training, development, supervision, and organizational development
  • Demonstrated collaboration, problem-solving, and crisis management experience
  • An ability to build positive and effective relationships with students, colleagues, senior leaders, and other internal and external partners across diverse populations
  • Demonstrated multicultural competence as well as comfort and skill in working with diverse populations
  • Effective written, verbal, and technological communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • A strong track record of experience in progressively responsible leadership positions within college student health or health-related field
  • Knowledge of best practices related to integrated health systems and public health programs and services designed to promote student success
  • Familiarity with assessment activities, and data-driven decision-making to enact positive culture change
  • An ability to enthusiastically support UVM’s commitment to enhance a diverse campus culture and inclusive student experience
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex systems and organizations.
  • Experience with electronic health record systems
  • Experience with contract negotiation, accreditation process, managed care, and insurance systems.
