Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development

VA Long Beach Healthcare System (VALBHS) is actively recruiting for the position of Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development (ACOS R&D).  The principal duty of the ACOS R&D is to take responsibility for the administration of the Medical Center's research program. The Research Service assists with the management of projects funded by the VA, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense, non-profit foundations, various corporations, and private companies.  These programs cover a wide range of biomedical disciplines ranging from basic science to multi-center clinical trials.  VA-funded programs encompass all of the funded programs designated by VA Central Office (VACO): Independent Investigator Awards, High Priority VA Research Program Projects, Multi-center Cooperative Studies, Career Development Awards and Research Career Scientist Awards.

The ACOS R&D formulates the goals and objectives of the research program for the VALBHS and is responsible for planning, developing and directing the complex scientific and administrative activities necessary to advance the program.  The incumbent has leadership responsibility for all administrative and budgetary operations of the Research Service.  The incumbent is responsible for maintaining a high performing Human Subjects Research Protection Program that complies with policies of the VA, Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP) and the FDA.  Responsibility also includes maintaining accreditation of the animal program by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.

The VALBHS is closely affiliated with the School of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine.  The ACOS R&D serves as an important liaison with the University for achieving mutual research goals.  The ideal candidate would be eligible for appointment at the Associate Professor or above level within his or her home department at UCI.
