The Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center (PVAMC) is seeking an ABIM board certified candidate for Transplant Nephrology. The PVAMC is an affiliate of the University of Pennsylvania and a large tertiary care VA referral center.   This is a full-time position. Selectee will work 6/8ths at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, and 2/8s at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.


The successful applicant will be responsible for pre-transplant evaluation of recipients and potential donors, preparation and presentation of transplant candidate summary letters to the transplant oversight committee, post-transplant care of kidney and pancreas transplant recipients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, evaluation and management of non-renal organ recipients with acute and chronic kidney diseases, and immunosuppression and the side-effects of immunosuppression.   The applicant will be required to contribute to quality assessment and performance improvement efforts in the transplant program. The applicant will also be responsible for inpatient consultative general nephrology, outpatient consultative general nephrology, outpatient management of patients with glomerular diseases, nephrolithiasis, electrolyte disorders, complex hypertension, chronic kidney diseases, and acute kidney injury. The applicant will also be responsible for clinical coverage of inpatient and outpatient hemodialysis.


The successful applicant will work closely with the PVAMC transplant coordinator, surgical teams, medical teams, collaborating VA’s, interns, residents, fellows, and students. The applicant must have experience performing transplant biopsies and reviewing pathology slides with a pathologist.   The applicant will bring knowledge and expertise of the latest developments in the field of transplant from national and international forums to the VA. The applicant should have a detailed understanding of transplant medicine and its molecular underpinnings.   Applicant should have demonstrated experience with the VA’s electronic medical record. Applicants must have demonstrated outstanding qualifications in education of medical students, residents, and fellows, and in clinical care in nephrology.

Applicant must have an MD or DO degree and an unrestricted medical license. Board certification in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, and ASH certification in Clinical Hypertension are required. Candidates should have trained in a top-tier Nephrology training program. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English. Applicants must be US citizens; however, non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens. The applicant must have formal training in Transplant Nephrology at an American Society of Transplant (AST) accredited program.
